Background of the study:
Cultural norms have traditionally underpinned mechanisms of conflict resolution in Warri South-West Local Government Area. These norms, deeply embedded in indigenous practices and communal values, provide frameworks for addressing disputes and fostering social harmony (Ibrahim, 2023). In many communities, customary conflict resolution methods—such as mediation by elders, ritualistic reconciliations, and community-based justice—have been effective in maintaining order and ensuring restorative justice (Chukwu, 2024). However, rapid socio-economic changes and external influences have challenged the efficacy and relevance of these traditional practices. The tension between customary conflict resolution methods and formal legal institutions is increasingly evident, as both systems vie for legitimacy in resolving communal disputes (Obi, 2025). This study examines how cultural norms continue to influence conflict resolution, highlighting both their strengths and limitations. It aims to understand the interplay between traditional practices and modern legal frameworks, offering insights into how these can be integrated to promote sustainable peace and community resilience (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Despite the historical success of cultural norms in resolving conflicts, contemporary challenges have undermined their effectiveness in Warri South-West. Increasing social complexities, external legal influences, and a decline in traditional authority structures have led to conflicts that are not adequately addressed by customary methods. This study seeks to explore the limitations of traditional conflict resolution and identify ways to reinforce these practices amid modern challenges (Eze, 2023).
